It appears you’ve been attracted to the challenge of the solution rather than it being the most impactful use of your energy.

It’s probably more beneficial to remove the need for this interface in as many situations as possible. Think about the instances where we resort to it and design ways around having to use it in those cases.

1 — The user can see a number and wants the phone to ring that number
2 — The user is being told a number by someone within earshot
3 — The user is calling a number they can recall from memory (It’s probably their number, but not their phone)

There is more to be gained from improving the way phones deal with these use cases than rearranging numbers on a pad. The number pad is a last resort for when the software has failed to properly anticipate the user’s need.
